Objectives: To provide African professionals the opportunity to improve
their educational levels and their practical experience of conservation in
the field.
Results:
Two professionals (one from Kenya and one from Botswana) were given full
scholarships to study towards a master degree in Heritage Resources Management
at the University of Zimbabwe. Both professionals were participants of
the AFRICA 2009 3rd Regional Course on Conservation and Management of Immovable
Cultural Heritage held in Mombasa in 2001.
An exchange was organized
with the University of Zimbabwe to allow Dr.
George Abungu to go for a two week period as a lecturer in the Department
of Archaeology for the Heritage Resources Management Programme.
Two
professionals, one each from Kenya and Ghana, received scholarships
to attend the Integrated Urban and Territorial Conservation Course (ITUC03)
at ICCROM.
One professional from Ethiopia received a scholarship to
attend the ICCROM Stone Course in Venice.
Ishanlosen Odiaua was awarded
an internship to work full time on the 1st Technical Course in Cameroon.
She later acted as a course assistant
for the
5th Regional Course in Mombasa.
Travel grants were awarded to six
professionals who are members of the AFRICA 2009 network, to attend
the ICOMOS General Assembly held
at Victoria
Falls, Zimbabwe and the pre-assembly conference in Kimberley, South
Africa. Of these six, two were unable to travel due to visa or other
travel problems.
Of the four who did participate, three played official roles in
the meeting and two presented papers to the scientific symposium.
A travel
grant was awarded to Assita Traore of the DPC of Burkina Faso to participate
in a project in northern Ghana, working with
the Nankani
women. These women decorate their houses with mural paintings in
a traditional manner
which is shared across the border in Burkina Faso.
