Research Project: Traditional Conservation and Maintenance Practices

Objectives: (1) To increase awareness on existing traditional conservation practices in African context and highlight the need for professionals to integrate them in their professional practice and for the definition of appropriate conservation strategies. (2) To prepare an illustrated document that would serve as a base for further publication to be used for awareness, information, and education.

Structure: The Coordination Committee gave a preliminary approval to this project in June 2000 and then final approval in November. Implementation is by CRATerre-EAG. 10 professionals from around the region (many former participants in AFRICA 2009 activities) have been asked to submit papers and graphic material to illustrate traditional conservation and maintenance practices on a variety of typologies in the region. The project was begun in 2000 with a call for papers and is still ongoing.

Expected Results: The first expected result will be a draft report with the case studies and illustrative material. Once this first draft is completed, the Coordination Committee will make a decision as to how the type of final publication to be made with the material.
