Research Project: Traditional Conservation and Maintenance Practices

Objectives:

  • To increase awareness of existing traditional conservation practices in African contexts and highlight the need for their integration in professional practice.
  • To prepare an illustrated document for awareness, information, and education.

Structure: The Coordination Committee gave a preliminary approval to this project in June 2000 and then final approval in November. Implementation was carried out by CRATerre-EAG. A number of professionals from around the region (many former participants in AFRICA 2009 activities) were asked to submit papers and graphic material to illustrate traditional conservation and maintenance practices on a variety of typologies in the region. 11 such papers were received and included in the report.

Results: A report has been published containing the 11 papers and illustrative material. A first set of 200 copies has printed and distributed during various activities organized by AFRICA 2009. This first version of the report has been highly appreciated, and the Steering Committee is considering a more formal publication of the report. At the same time, collection of additional articles on the topic is being carried out.
