Research Project: The Management Planning Process

Objectives:

  • Evaluate the recent experiences in planning and managing African cultural heritage resources
  • From the results of this evaluation, establish a new framework for the elaboration of management plans for African cultural heritage sites.
  • Revise the curricula of the section on management in the Regional Course organized annually by AFRICA 2009.

Structure: A workshop was held in Grenoble, France from 11 – 15 March 2002. Participation in the workshop included project staff from ICCROM, CRATerre-EAG, the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, 4 participants of past courses, and one staff member of the National Museums of Kenya who has worked on two of the regional courses thus far. The programme for the week consisted of SWOT analysis of the management planning process as it has been developed by AFRICA 2009 to date. Other topic discussed included the usefulness of management plans, the different types of management planning processes, the content of the planning process, and the presentation of results. The final topic related directly to the structure of the planning component of the Regional Course including stakeholder involvement, resource persons, and site selection criteria.

Results: A report has been printed with the results of the meeting. In addition, the recommendations were implemented in the context of the 4th Regional Course held in Porto Novo from 2 September to 22 November 2002. It is expected that this topic will continue to be revisited from time to time.
