Resolutions of the Dry Stone Masonry Workshop
Great Zimbabwe, 2000
We, the participants of the Workshop on Dry Stone Heritage of Southern
and Eastern Africa, gathered at Great Zimbabwe from the 11th to the 13th
of December 2000, from the countries of Botswana, Kenya, South Africa, Mozambique,
Namibia and Zimbabwe.
- Realising the commonality of and significance of dry stone walled monuments
in our region.
- Cognisant of the urgent need to inventory document, conserve
and manage that heritage for the benefit of the present and future generations.
- Aware of the threats to the heritage arising from development projects,
tourism and unsustainable use of the heritage.
- Need to preserve and
perpetuate the heritage and the traditions associated with it; and
- Determined
to enhance the general public's understanding and appreciation through
research, publications exhibitions and on site presentations
have resolved to constitute ourselves into a professional regional body
to be known as MAHWE HERITAGE ASSOCIATION (MHA) for the purposes of pursuing
the above stated goals through the following research agenda,
- Inventorying
- Documentation
- Conservation and Management
- Training
which we have unanimously agreed and adopted this 13th December 2000.
We further agreed to nominate an interim committee comprising:
Chairman, K.T. Chipunza,
Secretary, Isaya Onjala
4 Committee members: L. Morokam, P. Mokwena, F. Muchiabande, F. Kambombo.
which we task to:
- draft statutes of the association
- generally oversee the operations of
the association
- organise the first Annual General Meeting at which the
draft statutes would be considered and adopted and a full executive
committee elected.
We also agreed to invite the following to constitute an Advisory Board
of the association, which shall be the highest policy making organ
Tickey Pule, Director, Botswana National Museum
George Abungu, Director, National Museums of Kenya
Dawson Munjeri, Executive Director, National Museums and Monuments of
Zimbabwe
Phumla Madiba, CEO, South African Heritage Resources Agency
Angela Kane, National Director of Culture in Mozambique.
