Rock Art Documentation Course Manual

Objectives:

  • To develop a resource on documentation of rock art that will be useful to the wider network of professionals of AFRICA 2009.
  • To aid staff of COMRASA-2001 in the preparation of the format and content of the course on Documentation of Rock Art.
  • To ensure that course participants have access to information presented, not only during the activity, but after they return home.

Structure: The Southern African Rock Art Project (SARAP), a previous partner of both AFRICA 2009 and ICCROM, carried out a course on Rock Art Documentation at Kasama, Zambia from 2 - 14 July 2001. An agreement was made with AFRICA 2009 to sponsor the development and compilation of the course manual to be used in Kasama. 10 authors contributed to the manual to which AFRICA 2009 retains the copyright.

Results: A 354-page manual was prepared for use during the course at Kasama. 18 participants from 8 countries in southern Africa took part in the course and received the manual. The AFRICA 2009 programme also received 11 copies of the manual as well as a version on CD ROM. During the course, the manual was successfully tested through documentation of sites at Kasama. AFRICA 2009 has also begun to distribute the manual to partners in its network. A final report of the course is available from SARAP and AFRICA 2009.
