Background: From 24 - 28 September, the 3rd AFRICA 2009 Directors Seminar
was carried out in conjunction with the Regional Course on Conservation and
Management of Immovable Cultural Heritage.
Course Objectives: The objectives of the Directors Seminars were to:
allow course participants to present various aspects of the 3rd Regional
Course to the Directors;
examine the AFRICA 2009 Programme and review
its achievements and limitations;
examine the draft programme for the
next phase of AFRICA 2009 (2002 - 2005) and explore future orientations;
elect two new members of the Coordination Committee.
Structure: The theme of the seminar was, AFRICA 2009 in 2001: Review of
Progress and Future Directions. Because of the importance of the review of
the pilot phase of the programme, Directors were invited from 32 countries
from all over the region rather than only those directors who had participants
attending the regional course. During the seminar, the Directors:
heard presentations by participants of themes covered during the regional
course;
discussed the results of the independent assessment report as presented
by the head of the assessment team;
discussed the draft programme for
the next phase of AFRICA 2009 (2002 - 2005);
carried out group work
to (1) develop a Logical Framework for the next phase, (2) develop criteria
for selection of participants for future
courses, and (3) look at the long-term sustainability of the programme;
at the conclusion of the seminar, recommendations were adopted by the
Directors and certificates were presented to course participants.
Results:
27 Directors attended, joined by 18 representatives of partner and other
organizations.
21 course participants attended.
The assessment report of the pilot
phase of the programme was presented, discussed, and adopted.
The draft
programme for 2002 - 2005 was presented, discussed, and adopted.
A first
draft of a Logical Framework structure was developed for the next phase.
A modified set of selection criteria for course participants was developed.
A final set of recommendations were adopted by the Directors.
George
Abungu of Kenya (reelected) and Elizabeth Gomani of Malawi was elected
to the AFRICA 2009 Coordination Committee.
