Museums Of Kenya (NMK)
Seminar Objectives: The main objectives of the seminar were to:
allow course participants to present the 5th Regional Course to their
directors;
examine the progress of the AFRICA 2009 Programme and give direction
for the future;
allow directors to select 2 new representatives to the
AFRICA 2009 Steering Committee;
identify key issues related to globalization
and conservation of cultural heritage for use by directors in their
own countries, and by AFRICA
2009 when planning regional activities.
Structure: The participants of the 5th Regional Course presented to the
directors their reflections of the course. The reflections were based on
the units covered. Each participant reflected on how particular issues raised
in a specific unit would apply to his/her country. The presentations were
augmented by an exhibition of the management planning process prepared by
the participants. The Directors visited Shimoni Village, the site for the
management planning exercise. Here, the participants presented the sites
and the work they had done.
The participant presentations were followed by the section of the programme
on Globalization and Conservation of Cultural Heritage. Each of the directors
presented a paper on the topic, which was followed by group discussions to
identify the key issues. Finally the directors discussed the Africa 2009
programme. They deliberated on some of the topics for the technical courses
and thematic seminars. Some of the topics suggested included documentation
and surveying, conservation and interpretation of historic buildings, documentation
of the intangible heritage, conservation techniques etc.
