7th Regional Directors Seminar

Seminar objectives:
The main objectives of the seminar were:

  • To allow course participants to present the 7th Regional Course to the Directors;
  • To examine the progress of the AFRICA 2009 Programme for the Consolidation phase (2002-2005);
  • To discuss and examine the proposed programme and budget for the Final phase of the programme (2006-2009);
  • To allow directors to select 3 new representatives to the AFRICA 2009 Steering Committee.
  • Structure:
    The participants of the 7th Regional Course presented to the Directors their reflections of the course. The reflections were based on the units covered during the course. Each participant reflected on how particular issues raised in a specific unit would apply to his/her country. The presentations were augmented by an exhibition of the management planning process prepared by the participants. The participants were able to lead the Directors to the sites they were working on in Rabai and explained the process they had undertaken in order to produce the management plan.

    Two days of the seminar were spend on reflecting on the performance of the programme and also discussing the future directions. The focus of the discussions was on the Final Phase and the possible developments after 2009. The participants of the Directors seminar deliberated on issues related to making sure that the achievements so far attained by the programme would continue in after 2009.

    From these discussions the directors come up with a set of recommendations which aimed at priorities certain activities of the programme and at the insuring that the regional institutions are strengthened. The Directors identified CHDA and EPA as the institutions requiring strengthening in order to ensure that the capacity put in place by AFRICA 2009 continues to be improved.

    Results:

  • 27 Directors and 5 partners’ representatives attended the Seminar. The 22 participants of the 7th Regional course also attended the seminar.
  • Recommendations were made on the way forward with managing heritage sites associated with slavery Africa 2009 programme
  • Dr Ephraim Kamuhangire (Uganda), Mrs Esther Moombolah Goagoses (Namibia) and. M. Momodou Joof (The Gambia) were elected to the Steering committee of AFRICA2009. To file the third place for the French speaking side Mr Hamady Bocoum (Senegal) was also elected to the steering committee.
