Activities >> National Seminars Place: Siavongo, Zambia Background: The national seminar on Geographic Information systems based documentation and Inventory was a follow–up of various activities related to documentation done within the AFRICA 2009 programme activities. This followed the thematic regional seminar on Documentation and inventory seminar held in Zambia in 2000, the research activity on the documentation of Dry stone Structures held in Botswana and the technical course held in Cameroon in 2003. Objective: The main objectives of the national seminar were to introduce NHCC staff to the GIS technology. This was a seen as an introductory step to the computerisation of heritage records in Zambia. The European Union is funding the computerisation program. The national seminar also assessed the suitability of Zambia’s records for computerisation. It also aimed at improving the skills of NHCC in GIS based database. Structure: The national seminar combined both theoretical and practical work on GIS and database management. PMDA facilitated the seminar and resource persons come from the universities of Zambia and Zimbabwe.
