6th Regional thematic seminar on Conservation and Valorisation
of Traditional Architecture in Sub-Saharan Africa

Objective of the seminar
The main objective was to give opportunity to Heritage professionals
to present the state of conservation of Traditional Architecture in their
countries, in order to create a debate on the sustainability of the Traditional
architectures and to make proposals for its conservation and promotion.
Structure
After the introductory session, each participant of the Seminar
presented one case study on the state of conservation of traditional architecture
and the perspectives in their country. The presentations were completed
by three paper presented by resource persons on topics related to the sustainability
of traditional architecture, archiving and World Heritage nomination.
Following the presentations, a site visit in Gorée Island was organized.
Finally the last two days were used to reflect in groups on responses and
recommendations to set mechanism for better preservation of traditional
architecture and also strengthening of heritage institutions in Africa.
Results
•
16 professionals (5 Women and 11 Men) from 12 countries attended
the seminar;
•
A dossier on compilation of papers presented by participants;
•
A set of propositions and recommendations on ways and mechanism
for a better; preservation of traditional architecture in Africa;
•
Many press articles.
